Local Authority schools gained a significant increase in their funding from April 5 this year, a raise in funding that has not been affected by the subsequent shut down of schools.
The new funding for Academies will come into effect in September.
In total £14 billion of extra funding for schools was promised over three years including £780 million for SEND pupils. Schools’ budgets under the pledges will rise by £2.6 billion for 2020-21, £4.8 billion for 2021 to 2022, and £7.1 billion for 2022 to 2023.
Of course, as a result of the virus there is no telling what the government might decide in the future. But one thing is clear, the teacher shortage that was causing schools to rethink their entire approach to education is continuing and, if anything, is getting worse.
The impact of this is that money that might otherwise have been spent on teaching is available for other uses, and schools are finding ways to cope. And with Ofsted funding having been cut in England, there is limited opportunity for government officials to keep an eye on what is going on.
In terms of promotional material reaching schools, this has been very much reduced during the crisis. But of those materials that have gone out, the most effective appear to be ones that don’t lead with a focus on the pandemic itself, but instead focus on what schools need now.
There is no doubt that a large number of companies are waiting and seeing, which means that those promotions that do arrive now are likely to get more attention – not least because many teachers are only teaching partial classes or teaching partial timetables.
